Chapter 37
Monty parked his old truck in front of a motel. He couldn’t get a reservation inside the town of Brewster, because everything was booked solid for the summer season and most were out of his price range, anyway. But this little flea-bitten place was perfect for him. He’d checked in earlier and then had driven to a little market down the road to pick up beer and snacks.
He grunted when he got out of the truck, slammed the door so it would latch, and walked into his room.
So far, nobody he’d seen had recognized the picture of Scout he’d waved in front of them. But he knew this was the right town, and he was determined to find her.
He figured he’d hang out at popular spots and watch for her. There was a coffee shop that looked interesting. Another promising location was a store that was mobbed in the center of town, simply called The Brewster Store. It had benches that were a perfect place for locals to sit, drink their coffee, and read the paper. He’d sit with them and bring up Scout, show them her photo. He’d walk up and down the sides of the roads, too, keeping an eye out for her crummy car. It was loud enough that if she drove by, he’d hear her coming for miles in advance.
Unless she’s bought a brand new one with all that money.
The thought infuriated him.
Why did she deserve that? Why hadn’t Iris left half of it to him?
Angry now, he ripped open a can of warm beer and guzzled down one whole can. He threw the rest of the six-pack into the mini-fridge and flopped into a chair, flicking on the television. He had no idea what the channels meant out here, so he flipped through all of the cable stations until he found a game show.
At least that felt familiar.
Propping his feet on the coffee table with a new bag of chips, he settled deeper into the old stuffed chair.
“I’ll find you, Scout,” he mumbled. “Just you wait.”

Fritzi sat in her pale yellow bedroom, shoulders heaving. She’d needed a good cry this week, and had waited until everyone was asleep to give in to her emotions.
Photos of Rudy fanned out on the bed around her. Some showed him in his youth, before she even met him. Just a boy, he smiled at the camera under a Christmas tree, from a rowboat, and in a group with his baseball teammates. He’d given her copies of those pictures when she told him she was interested in his childhood, when she pestered him about what happened back then like whom he’d dated and what friends he’d had as a boy. They had been good friends in the beginning, and she’d worshipped him.
In another shot, he stood before the sea with his red hair blowing in the breeze, looking off to the horizon like a monarch surveying his kingdom.
She loved that photo.
She picked it up and hugged it to her breast.
